Xtellus Introduces Turnkey ROADM Module Family
First to Deliver Integrated ROADM Benefits without the Performance Penalty

Morris Plains, NJ, Feb. 16, 2006 - Xtellus, a leading supplier of advanced ROADM technology for the metro and long-haul optical equipment markets, announced today its XRM family of turnkey ROADM modules. These integrated ROADM modules will allow optical networking system suppliers to more easily and cost effectively build advanced ROADM network elements without the performance penalties imposed by other module designs.

The first module in this family, the XRM-7500, permits system suppliers to add ROADM capabilities to their current optical networking equipment designs with as little as a single card upgrade. This evolutionary approach allows suppliers to modify their existing equipment designs without undergoing long, extensive, complicated and costly redesigns. This approach can even make possible the in-field upgrade of deployed equipment to have reconfigurable optical networking capabilities.

The XRM-7500, a four port integrated module, delivers the entire suite of ROADM functionality needed to drop wavelengths, equalize or block wavelengths on the through path, add wavelengths and monitor optical power. The innovative XRM 7500 gives optical system suppliers many benefits, including:

  • an ability to reuse the demux and mux cards of existing designs to drop and add wavelengths;
  • a single consolidated interface to control the pass-through equalization and optical power monitoring functions;
  • the smallest footprint and lowest height of any ROADM module thus fitting in a single card slot in most optical systems;
  • the lowest power consumption permitting denser equipment designs; the free space, micro-optics-based design provides the highest optical performance of any ROADM module, integrated or not.
The free space micro-optics-based design of the XRM 7500 can give optical networking systems suppliers a big competitive advantage. Based on the Xtellus wavelength blocker technology, the XRM 7500 inherits the lowest insertion loss and widest passband performance of any metro ROADM module in the market. This means an XRM-based design can have the competitive advantage of a virtually unlimited ability to cascade ROADM network elements resulting in increased span distances and denser networks providing maximum flexibility and lifetime upgradeability for the carrier end-customers.
"With the XRM 7500, Xtellus is successfully responding to requests from customers for turnkey ROADM solutions that build on the proven optical performance of our liquid crystal-based wavelength blockers," said Tom Dudley, chief executive officer and president of Xtellus. "Unlike other integrated devices, the XRM 7500 provides a high level of integration without the need to sacrifice system performance. With our XRM product line, we once again demonstrate our commitment to deliver market leading value, performance, innovation and choice."
Xtellus will show the XRM-7500 turnkey ROADM module at the OFC/NFOEC conference in Anaheim, CA., March 5-9, booth 1112. Interested optical networking systems suppliers or analysts can also schedule private briefings on the XRM family and other next generation Xtellus product developments at the conference by contacting the Xtellus sales department at 973-326-1100 extension 113.
